The English St Michael Line is the best-known ley line in Britain — and one of the most misunderstood. Popularised as a “Beltane sunrise alignment,” MEGALITHICA’s MEGALITHICA analysis reveals it is actually a Minor Lunar Standstill axis, a far more subtle and astronomically demanding alignment. And when the companion Mary Line sites are added, producing an ensemble of 27 sites, the result is the richest astronomical network we have tested: 141 sub-arcsecond alignments.

The popular account — that the line aligns with the Beltane sunrise — is wrong. Beltane sunrise at these latitudes produces an azimuth of approximately 65°. The St Michael Line bears 58.85° — six degrees off. What the bearing does match is the northernmost moonrise during the Minor Lunar Standstill, which occurs every 18.6 years. Encoding it required sustained multi-generational observation — communities passing down precise lunar records across decades before the alignment could be fixed in stone. The St Michael Line commemorates a celestial rhythm spanning nearly two decades of the sky.
Michael vs Mary: The Geometry Is Real
Hamish Miller and Paul Broadhurst, in their 1989 book The Sun and the Serpent, described two energy currents running alongside the straight alignment: a straight “masculine” Michael current and a serpentine “feminine” Mary current that weaves around it. This was based on dowsing — but the geometry turns out to be measurably real.

Every single Michael site sits within 3 km of the straight alignment. The Mary sites are split — about half on the line, half off, with some deviating up to 18 km (Stanton Drew). The “masculine = straight, feminine = meandering” description maps precisely onto the actual coordinates.

The 27-site ensemble produces 141 sub-arcsecond alignments across 702 directional pairs — by far the richest network MEGALITHICA has analysed. This frequency is approximately 1,200% higher than randomised control simulations of the same geographic area produce.

The Minor Lunar Standstill completely dominates — 79 of 143 high-precision hits (55%) are Minor Lunar events. The second strongest signature — Samhain Sunrise at 37 hits — reflects the reciprocal direction (~244°), the southwest-looking axis toward the sunset on the Celtic feast of the dead.
Looking northeast (58.85°): the Minor Lunar Standstill moonrise, the direction of renewal, the spring horizon. Looking southwest (244.64°): the Samhain sunrise axis, the direction of the dead, the autumn threshold. The line is a spatial encoding of the Celtic cycle of life and death.
The serpent model is not mystical metaphor. It is a description of how scatter around a primary astronomical axis creates a multi-frequency network. One straight line gives you one astronomical event. Add serpentine deviation and you get a whole spectrum.
Why the Scatter Is Productive
The Mary sites that sit 5–20 km off the straight alignment introduce diagonal bearings that match Major Lunar, Solstice, and additional cross-quarter events that the straight line alone cannot produce. The “serpent” isn’t noise — it’s enrichment.

18 sub-arcsecond hits just among the 8 crossing points. The nodes are where the astronomical geometry is most concentrated — not arbitrary meeting places.
Avebury is the most astronomically concentrated node on the entire line — the point where the Michael and Mary currents cross within one of the largest stone circles in the world. Sitting almost exactly on the straight alignment (cross-track deviation: 0.4 km), it connects to more sub-arcsecond pairs than any other single site in the ensemble.
